The death toll in the Israel-Hamas war continued to climb early Wednesday, the fifth day after the Palestinian militant group launched a massive, highly coordinated terror attack on Israel from the tiny Gaza Strip. The brutal attack has claimed more than 1,200 lives in Israel, including 14 Americans, and led Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare, "We are at war." Israeli military and civilian officials confirmed reports to CBS News on Wednesday of "a massacre" on a kibbutz near the Gaza border, with an emergency response official saying he saw with his own eyes children among victims who were beheaded in the community.President Biden called the Hamas attack "an act of sheer evil" and said American citizens were also among the dozens of civilians and Israeli troops being held as hostages by Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007 and has long been designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. government.At least 950 people, including at least 140 children, have been killed in the Gaza Strip by Israel's retaliatory airstrikes, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. What is a kibbutz?
A kibbutz is a type of communal settlement, traditionally rural, in Israel. The first kibbutz was created more than 90 years ago, the name coming from the word kvutza, which means "group" in Hebrew.In most early kibbutzim, people worked in agriculture and pooled their money. Everyone's income helped run the settlement. Now, many kibbutzim are private and many engage in manufacturing, rather than — or in addition to — agriculture. Kibbutz Degania, for example, runs a diamond-cutting factory, which grosses several million dollars a year, according to Israel's tourism site. Some attract tourists and have hotels and many contribute to the wider economy.There are about 125,000 people living across an estimated 250 kibbutzim, which are unique to Israel, according to the Jewish Agency for Israel, an organization that connects Jewish communities.As part of its attack, Hamas targeted Kibbutz Kfar Aza, a farming community. Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Maj. Libby Weiss called it a "massacre," saying Hamas beheaded babies, children and adults.At the start of Saturday's attack, Hamas targeted a music festival in the desert near Kibbutz Re'im, a settlement in the southern part of the country. Israeli official calls Gaza blockade fair response to Hamas terror
Israel Katz, the minister of National Infrastructure, Energy, and Water for Israel, issued a statement on X calling the blockade of Gaza a fair response to Saturday's attack by Hamas. "For years we supplied Gaza with electricity, water and fuel. Instead of saying thank you, they sent thousands of human animals to slaughter, murder, rape and kidnap babies, women and the elderly - that's why we decided to stop the flow of water, electricity and fuel and now their local power station has collapsed and there is no electricity in Gaza," Katz wrote in Hebrew. Other officials have referred to the situation as a "complete siege."Â
Even prior to the blockade, the Israeli organization Gisha said that many people in Gaza do not have sufficient access to clean water. Officials said electricity in the Gaza Strip was only available for about half the day. No food or medical supplies are currently being allowed in or out. Palestinian civilians are already suffering amid the tight restrictions and ongoing aerial bombardments.Â
Katz said the siege will continue "until the Hamas threat to Israel and the world is removed."Â

Shipment of advanced weaponry from U.S. arrives in Israel, officials say
An initial shipment of advanced weaponry from the United States has been delivered to Israel, the country's Ministry of Defense said Wednesday. The ministry released videos and photos of materials being unloaded from a cargo plane. The materials being unloaded were blurred. The Israel Defense Forces said on social media that the plane landed at Nevatim Airbase, in the southern part of the country.Â

Israel to form emergency unity government
A top opposition Israeli politician says he has reached an agreement to enter a wartime unity government with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Benny Gantz, a former defense minister and military chief of staff, released what he said was a joint statement with Netanyahu.The statement said they would form a five-member "war-management" Cabinet. It will consist of Netanyahu, Gantz, current Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and two other top officials serving as "observer" members.It said the government would not pass any legislation or decisions that are not connected to the war as long as the fighting continues. It was not immediately clear what would happen to Netanyahu's existing government partners, a collection of far-right and ultra-Orthodox parties.

Israel's defense ministry lays out huge supply boost for military ahead of expected Gaza invasion

Norway urges global community to keep up "financial assistance to the Palestinian people"

Gaza officials warn of looming humanitarian crisis as Israeli blockade cuts power and water
The roughly 2.3 million residents of the Gaza Strip were facing the prospect of a dire humanitarian and environmental situation Wednesday due to an Israeli blockade that has cut power and water supplies, the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility (CMWU), which is responsible for water and waste management in the Palestinian territory, told CBS News.Since Israel declared a "complete siege" on Gaza Monday, in response to the Hamas group's bloody terror rampage in Israel, power lines providing 80% of the densely packed strip of land's electricity, and the company providing 30% of its water supplies, have been cut off.Insufficient fuel supplies for backup generators has already led to prolonged power outages, forcing essential facilities including wastewater treatment plants to shut down. The Mayor of Gaza City, Dr. Yehya Al Saraj, told CBS News Tuesday that "raw sewage has been thrown to the sea, polluting the sea," adding: "This affects everybody in the region." "We can barely provide people with a little water," Saraj said, noting the destruction of several water pumping stations was exacerbating the crisis.The CMWU called on national and international institutions to urgently intervene and provide fuel and spare parts for backup generators, so that power and water supplies in Gaza could be restored and waste management facilities brought back online.By CBS News' Marwan al-Ghoul in Gaza and Maddie Richards in London

U.N. aid agency in Gaza says 9 workers killed by Israeli strikes, no aid getting in
The United Nations humanitarian relief agency that operates in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip said Wednesday that nine of its workers, six staff and three contractors, had been killed by Israeli airstrikes on the densely packed Palestinian territory since the Jewish state started retaliating for Hamas' brutal terror attack on Saturday.The U.N.'s Palestine Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), said in a statement posted online Wednesday that at least 20 of its facilities in Gaza had been damaged by the strikes, including two schools.

A spokesperson for the group said earlier that UNRWA had not been able to bring any additional aid into Gaza since Saturday, when Hamas militants unleashed an unprecedented ground, air and sea assault on Israel. Israeli forces have tightened their longstanding blockade of Gaza since the attack, sealing off the coastal strip of land and vowing that nothing would go in or out, including water, food, medicine, gas or electricity.
The UN agency said staff were continuing their humanitarian work despite the risks presented by Israel's bombardment and the challenges increased by the blockade.

Family mourns son killed fighting Hamas
Aryeh Ziering, a 27-year-old Israeli-American, was killed in action fighting Hamas militants over the weekend. His parents, Debbie and Mark Ziering, spoke to CBS News about the devastating loss of their son."You never want to get the knock on the door," Debbie Ziering said. "With the two army officers outside. This woman came in and she said to us, 'Your son was killed today.'"She said her son was "just a regular guy.""He loved sports. Michele Freund, an American physician assistant, was on vacation in Israel when Hamas first attacked. She knew she had to help, so she volunteered at a local hospital."I feel like it's also my country," she told CBS News. A Massachusetts woman whose ex-husband and his brother were killed by Hamas during the attacks on Israel, said of what happened, "This is Holocaust." Dual Israeli-American citizens, brothers Igal and Amit Wachs were in the village of Netiv HaAsara near the Gaza Strip on Saturday, "when terrorists came in," Liat Wachs told CBS Boston. Wachs said Igal, her ex-husband, and Amit, were part of a security patrol team in the village. Boston college helps students evacuate from Israel
Students at a Boston college were safely evacuated from Israel with the help of Northeastern University's global security team, the school said Monday. Three Northeastern students — Jesse Ruigomez, Keren Doherty and Joshua Einhorn — were in Israel on Saturday during Hamas' deadly incursion, according to the university. Ruigomez and Doherty were completing cooperative education programs in Tel Aviv, while Einhorn, who is currently studying abroad in Greece, was visiting Jerusalem for the Jewish holiday Simchat Torah. Doherty is set to land in Boston on Tuesday night, CBS Boston reported. She spoke to the station from a Portugese airport."I'm very grateful that I was able to get out, but I know a lot of people still struggling there," Doherty told CBS Boston. Doherty, a fourth-year nursing student, was doing a co-op internship as a first-aid responder at a Tel Aviv hospital for Magen David Adom, Israel's emergency medical response service. She woke up Saturday to the sound of sirens and spent much of the morning hiding in a bomb shelter with her parents, who had come to visit her. Ruigomez was in Israel completing a a financial planning and analysis co-op at Nayax, a global financial technology company. He was in central Israel on Saturday. "I was safe, but it's a horrible situation all around," he said, according to Northeastern.Â
The school provided Ruigomez and Doherty transportation and a security detail from Tel Aviv to Ben Gurion Airport. Ruigomez took a flight to Madrid, Spain, where he has family, while Doherty took a flight to Lisbon, Portugal.
Einhorn, who had already booked a return flight to Greece before the attack, arrived safely back in Athens on Sunday, the school said.
Northeastern students and faculty traveling abroad are required to register with the college's Global Safety and Support Network, according to the school. It allows the university to help them in the event of an emergency.

Cruise ships detour away from Israel
Major cruise lines said on Tuesday that since the recent Hamas attacks on Israel, they have adjusted their itineraries to detour away from Israeli ports. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line said in a statement that it canceled stops at Israel on the cruise ship, called Rhapsody of the Seas, and on other ships, and are replacing ports in Israel and Egypt with various stops in Greece, including Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes and Bodrum. MSC said in a statement cruise ships will detour from Israel, and instead stop in Turkey and Cyprus. Norwegian Cruise Line canceled planned stops in Ashdod and Haifa, Israel, and will reroute their itinerary to Turkey, the company said in a statement. Holland America said in a statement their cruise ship Nieuw Statendam arrived in Haifa on Saturday, Oct. 7, the same day the Israeli government "declared a state of emergency in response to terrorist attacks in the southern part of the state." After consulting with security, Holland America called all their guests and staff back to the cruise ship, which departed Israel at 8:20 p.m. local time that same evening. Carnival and Princess Lines told CBS News their cruise ships are not making stops in Israel, but did not provide updated information on revised or future itineraries. — Reporting contributed by Katie Krupnik.

U.S. special operations forces working with Israelis, Defense Secretary says

American Airlines suspends flights to Tel Aviv until December
American Airlines announced Tuesday afternoon it would be suspending flights into Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport through Dec. 4 because of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.The company had been among a handful of U.S. and international carriers that had already suspended flights this week into Tel Aviv.Delta has suspended flights through the end of the month, and United Airlines has suspended flights into and out of Tel Aviv as well.

Palestinians across the heavily bombarded Gaza Strip have described their horror as the Israeli military continued to hammer the area in the aftermath of Hamas' incursion into the Jewish state over the weekend. Gaza City was pummeled by aerial bombardments on Tuesday as Israel Defense Forces continued to carry out the first phase of their retaliation for Saturday's unprecedented attacks.Gaza residents described increasingly desperate conditions that ordinary people were facing on the ground as Israel tightened its long-standing blockade of the Palestinian territory. Hamas would hold sole responsibility for the impact of the blockade on civilians, Israeli authorities have said. "There are no shelters or bunkers or safe routes or safe zones in Gaza. So it's not like you can sit down and plan with your family on how to leave or a safe place to go to," local resident Omar Ghraieb told CBS News over the phone. "We are a family of five people and these unfortunate events unfolded so very fast... We didn't really have enough time to actually stock up enough on food, medicine and water," Ghraeib said. Israeli military says it struck Hezbollah posts after rocket fire
The Israel Defense Forces says its tanks struck two Hezbollah observation posts in response to rockets fired from Lebanon Tuesday."The IDF is prepared for all scenarios in all arenas, and will continue to operate in order to protect Israeli civilians," the IDF said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.The Israeli Air Force said earlier Tuesday that 15 rockets were fired from Lebanon, which shares a border with Israel. It said four rockets were intercepted and 10 fell in open areas. Hezbollah, like Hamas, is backed by Iran. It is based in Lebanon. There have already been deadly exchanges of fire between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group along the Israel-Lebanon border, and a senior U.S. defense official told CBS News that Washington is deeply concerned about the possibility of that becoming a second front in the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Oil prices are rising
Global oil prices are rising amid fears violence between Israel and Hamas could spread across the Middle East and threaten the world's oil supply. Both U.S. and global oil futures traded roughly 4% higher on Monday, at around $86 a barrel. While crude traded slightly lower early Tuesday, the fighting has raised concerns that oil could cross the $100 per barrel threshold, compared with its current level of about $86, according to S&P Global.While Israel is a small player in oil production, the fear for investors is that the conflict could "become a wider conflagration," drawing in the proxy agents of "Middle East regional players that are major oil exporters," which could have an effect on oil prices, according to Alan Gelder, vice president of refining, chemicals and oil markets at energy research firm Wood Mackenzie.  "The most immediate market impact could be more stringent enforcement of [restrictions on] Iranian exports... by the U.S., if the conflict widens," Gelder said. U.S. and Israeli officials say Iran is a primary backer of Hamas. The Biden administration has said that while Tehran is "broadly complicit" in supporting Hamas terrorism, it has seen no evidence of a direct Iranian role in planning or carrying out the recent attack on Israel.

At least 200,000 displaced in Gaza, U.N. says
The United Nations' humanitarian office says at least 200,000 people have been displaced in Gaza since the start of the conflict with Israel. Some have fled out of fear while others' homes were destroyed by Israeli airstrikes, humanitarian coordinator Lynn Hastings said in a statement Tuesday."Most of them are taking shelter in UNRWA's schools, at least two of which have already been damaged by airstrikes in the area," Hastings said.Israel has cut water to Gaza, she said, and access to electricity, food, and fuel have been severed. Palestinians in Gaza have electricity for up to four hours a day, which "hinders the ability of health facilities to function and treat those injured," she said.

Airstrike kills 2 Palestinian journalists in Gaza, local news reports
An Israeli airstrike in Gaza City killed two Palestinian journalists early Tuesday, according to the Palestinian news agency Wafa.Wafa identified the journalists as editor Saeed Al-Taweel and photographer Mohammed Sobih. The airstrike occurred close to an area housing several media offices.Three Palestinian journalists reportedly were shot and killed while reporting in Gaza on Saturday. The Committee to Protect Journalists, citing Palestinian press freedom groups, identified two of them as photographer Ibrahim Mohammad Lafi and reporter Mohammad Jarghoun. "Dozens" of Israelis being held captive, IDF says
Israeli officials have not given an official accounting of how many of the country's citizens have been taken captive by Hamas militants, but an IDF spokesperson told CBS News on Monday that it was in the "dozens.""The list is comprised of Israeli nationals, women, children, men, elderly, disabled, toddlers and infants, as young as baby age and as old as 80, including Holocaust survivors," IDF international spokesperson Lt. Miri Messika says she and her family barely survived when Hamas fighters infiltrated and attacked their home in Be'eri, a kibbutz just three miles from the border with Gaza. She, her husband and three children jumped from a second floor window after militants set their apartment on fire."It was very frightening," she told CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Norah O'Donnell. Brandeis University professor says daughter, son-in-law were killed in attacks
Ilan Troen, a professor at Brandeis University, was in Israel when his his daughter, son-in-law and grandson became victims in the Saturday attacks. "My grandson has witnessed the murder of his mother by people who rehearsed what they were doing," Troen told CBS Boston.Deborah Matias, 50, and her husband Shlomi were killed by militants. "The terrorists came into their place, broke through the doors, shot them," said Troen.He said his daughter's last act of motherhood was protecting her son, Roten."They made sure to fall on him and thereby saved his life. Pro-Israel, pro-Palestinian protesters face off in NYC
Protesters took to the streets in New York City for dueling rallies over the war between Israel and Hamas. Pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian supporters gathered outside the Israel consulate Monday afternoon.There were passionate pleas from both sides, with many in the crowd having relatives in either Israel or the Palestinian territories. "I'm just afraid for my family. Whatever happened is just inhumane, and I'm here to support," said Yael Udi. "My friend's niece, she has been kidnapped. They do not know her whereabouts. She was in that party and they're still looking for her."Nas Shuaib was standing with the Palestinians. "In the West Bank, I have relatives, and our village is on lockdown, and the settlers are going house to house attacking our people," Shuaib said. "The United States has to stay out of the conflict, unless they're going to do a peaceful negotiation." Brooklyn resident Ava Marron said, "What brought me to this rally is wanting a two-state solution where Palestinians and Israelis can have humanity and live peacefully."
The NYPD stepped up security to make sure things didn't get out of hand, and there were no arrests reported.

Chicago area mother and daughter missing in Israel after Hamas attack
A Chicago area mother and daughter are among those missing in Israel following this weekend's attacks. Judith and Natalie Raanan were in Nahal Oz, a kibbutz in southern Israel near Gaza that was attacked by militants over the weekend, and they haven't been heard from since. Judith Raanan is a congregant of Chabad of Evanston, where Rabbi Meir Hecht said the family fears the worst."Apparently from the information that we have at this time, it seems like they've been abducted, the two of them, mom and daughter to Gaza," Hecht said. "And we are praying for their well-being and for their safety of all of our brothers and sisters in the land of Israel."

FBI says no credible threats to U.S. after attacks on Israel
The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Monday that it was "closely monitoring" events in Israel after the Hamas attacks, but that it had no "specific and and credible intelligence indicating a threat to the United States.""We will not hesitate to adjust our security posture, as appropriate, to protect the American people," the FBI said in a statement "We are closely coordinating with our counterparts in the region as well as other international partners."The agency said reports of deceased, injured or missing Americans were being investigated. On Monday, President Biden confirmed that at least 11 Americans had been killed during the attacks and that others remained unaccounted for.

Biden confirms at least 11 Americans killed in Israel
President Biden confirmed in a statement Monday afternoon that at least 11 American citizens were killed during the attacks in Israel."Sadly, we now know that at least 11 American citizens were among those killed — many of whom made a second home in Israel," Mr. Biden said in a statement released by the White House. "It's heart wrenching. These families have been torn apart by inexcusable hatred and violence."Mr. Biden also said other Americans remained unaccounted for. "We are working with Israeli officials to obtain more information as to their whereabouts," the president said. "My heart goes out to every family impacted by the horrible events of the past few days."The president said the State Department was providing services for Americans still in Israel, adding that "commercial flights and ground options are still available" for those wanting to leave the country."Please also take sensible precautions in the days ahead and follow the guidance of local authorities," Mr. Biden added.Â

More than 100 killed in small Israeli community, rescue service says
Israeli rescue service Zaka says more than 100 bodies have been recovered from a small farming community that was the scene of a hostage standoff during Hamas' attack against Israel. That toll is part of the total of at least 900 dead reported by Israeli officials so far.Be'eri, a kibbutz not far from the border with Gaza, had a population of about 1,000 people before the attack.

Israeli reserve troops called up for duty
Israel is calling up 300,000 reserve troops as it responds to the deadly surprise attack by Hamas militants. Cars were lined up for as far as the eye could see outside a military base where some of those personnel came to report for duty."I never thought something like this could happen," a military reservist named Hila told CBS News as she prepared to join the fight. Hamas made a "mistake of historic proportions," Netanyahu says
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a strong message on Monday, promising retaliation against Hamas after its brazen attacks against Israel. "We didn't want this war. It was forced upon us in the most brutal and savage way," Netanyahu said. "But though Israel didn't start this war, Israel will finish it."The statement comes as Israel intensifies its campaign of airstrikes against Hamas targets in Gaza and deploys combat divisions and activates reservists to fight. "Hamas will understand that by attacking us, they have made a mistake of historic proportions," Netanyahu said. "We will exact a price that will be remembered by them and Israel's other enemies for decades to come."In his statement, Netanyahu also thanked President Biden "for his unequivocal support," as well as the people and Congress of the United States of America."In fighting Hamas, Israel is not only fighting for its own people," Netanyahu said. "It is fighting for every country that stands against barbarism."The surprise attack by Hamas was the deadliest day in decades of conflict in the region. Airstrikes in Gaza
Israel said it struck hundreds of Hamas targets in Gaza overnight between Sunday and Monday. Four Israeli combat divisions were deployed to the south and another 100,000 reservists were activated to fight.CBS News' Marwan al-Ghoul reported from Gaza City that the Israeli airstrikes had been relentless since Saturday, with houses, apartment buildings and mosques among the structures hit, mostly without warning, overnight. Images of the area showed buildings in Gaza completely reduced to rubble in the aftermath. Israel has long accused Hamas and other militant factions of keeping fighters and weapons in or near civilian infrastructure.

Samar Alyan, who lives in the sprawling al-Shati refugee camp just outside of Gaza City, described the overnight bombings to CBS News on Monday. The camp is home to about 150,000 refugees.
"I could not sleep last night as the planes bombed the mosque nearby, causing casualties and breaking the windows of my house," Alyan said, adding, "We do not know what fate has in store for us ... Israel retaliates on civilians."
Inside Gaza City itself, displaced people sought shelter inside schools operated by UNRWA, the United Nations' humanitarian agency in Palestinian territories.

Hamas threatens to kill hostages
Hamas threatened on Monday to kill hostages it is holding if Israeli airstrikes continue "targeting" Gaza residents without warning."We declare that any targeting of our people in their homes without prior warning will be regrettably faced with the execution of one the hostages of civilians we are holding," a spokesman for Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said in an audio statement, news agencies reported.Hamas also said they are not open to negotiating a prisoner exchange with Israel as long as fighting continues, a member of the group's political office in Doha told AFP.  Israel's Government Press Office said Sunday that Hamas took more than 100 hostages. Those kidnapped included women, children and the elderly, and they are believed to have been moved into Gaza.Sisters Inbal Albini, 55, and Noam Peri, 40, told CBS News that their father, Chaim Peri, 79, and Albini's half brother, Daniel Darlington, 35, were kidnapped."Terrorists broke into the house and looked for people and then they took him," Peri said Sunday, at a makeshift center in Tel Aviv for loved ones of people either taken hostage or missing. She told CBS News that her mother also witnessed her father being taken.Qatari mediators told Reuters Monday that they wanted to negotiate with Hamas to win freedom for the Israeli women and children who had been taken prisoner, in exchange for the release of 36 Palestinian women and children from Israel's prisons.

Harrowing accounts of music festival attack
Horrific details and harrowing stories of survival began to emerge in the hours and days after the attack, including accounts of the massacre that unfolded Saturday at the Supernova music festival in the southern Israeli desert, near the border with Gaza. Hundreds of attendees were killed as gunmen from the Palestinian militant group Hamas stormed the festival, shooting into the crowd and taking people hostage. One aid group reported that 260 bodies were recovered from the site. One video widely shared on social media shows a young woman calling for help with her arm outstretched as she is taken away on a motorcycle. After she was identified as Noa Argamani, a university student, people began to repost the video alongside the caption, "Her name is Noa."

Argamani's father, Yaakov, called her "an amazing person" and "a sweet child" in comments to CBS News. Speaking in Hebrew, Yaakov said he only wants the Israeli government to use "peaceful measures" to get his daughter back.Â
"We need to act with sensitivity," he said. "They also have mothers who are crying. The same as it is for us."Â
Another attendee, Gal Levy, 22, managed to survive the attack after being shot in both legs. He told CBS News' Imtiaz Tyab he waited six hours for help. "I feel let down by the government. I feel let down by the army," he said. "I lost like two liters of blood, and I was really sure after the guy that came — the terrorist, to take us — that that's it. I'm gonna die."

"Complete siege" of Gaza Strip
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said he had ordered a "complete siege" of the Gaza Strip in the wake of the Hamas attack, with officials cutting electricity to the densely-populated region and blockading food and fuel.Â

The Israeli military launched a series of deadly airstrikes on Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas.Â
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said "fighter jets and helicopters, aircraft and artillery struck over 500 Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorist targets in the Gaza Strip" on Sunday and into Monday morning. The Israeli military said it destroyed tunnels and at least seven "Hamas command centers" in Gaza, as well as a command center used by Islamic Jihad, which is another militant group that operates in the Gaza Strip.
Hamas continued lobbing rocket fire into Israel, with warning sirens sounding in Tel Aviv on Monday.
Israel's military said Monday that, after two days of fighting, it had retaken control of all communities that came under attack in southern Israel, and that there were no more active militants in the area.
CBS News senior foreign correspondent Holly Williams reported from southern Israel that Israel is expected to launch a full ground incursion into Gaza in the coming days.

Americans among the dead and missing, officials say
In addition to the hundreds of Israelis and Palestinians confirmed dead, at least nine Americans were killed in the attacks, the U.S. National Security Council said Monday. There are also concerns that a number of Americans were among those taken hostage."I expect the situation of the hostages to take on increasing focus over the course of the coming days," Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer said on "CBS Mornings," adding that the U.S. will be "laser focused" on it."Just given the sheer numbers involved, we do expect that there may well be Americans who have been caught up in the hostage taking," Finer said.Â
In an interview on "Face the Nation"Â Sunday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said U.S. officials were working to verify reports that multiple Americans were dead or taken hostage as Hamas carried out its attack on Israel.

U.S. pledges support to Israel
The surprise attack by Hamas was the deadliest day in decades of conflict in the region. U.S. political leaders immediately condemned the Hamas assault."The United States stands with the people of Israel in the face of these terrorist assaults. Israel has the right to defend itself and its people, full stop," President Biden said in remarks Saturday. "There's never a justification for terrorist attacks. And my administration's support for Israel's security is rock solid and unwavering," Mr. Biden said.The White House said additional U.S. assistance for the Israeli military was on its way, with more to follow over the coming days.Â
During a call with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, Mr. Biden "emphasized that the U.S. stands alongside Israel," the Israeli president's office said, with the prime minister describing the support as "unreserved."
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also confirmed Sunday that the U.S. will be "rapidly providing the Israel Defense Forces with additional equipment and resources, including munitions." And he said he had ordered American military ships, including an aircraft carrier and additional aircraft, to move closer to the eastern Mediterranean in response to the attack on Israel.

Israel is "at war"
In a televised address Saturday after Hamas launched its attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the country was "at war" and said Palestinian militants would "pay an unprecedented price." He vowed the Israeli military would use all of its resources to destroy Hamas. Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that governs the Gaza Strip — a 230-square-mile area that is home to some 2.3 million people and has been under Israeli blockade since 2007 — is designated a terror organization by Israel and the United States. Hamas is backed by Iran and gets most of its funding and support from the Iranian regime. "What I can say, without a doubt, is that Iran is broadly complicit in these attacks," U.S. deputy national security adviser Jon Finer said on "CBS Mornings" Monday. "Iran has been Hamas' primary backer for decades. They have provided them weapons. They have provided them training. They have provided them financial support. And so, in terms of broad complicity, we are very clear about a role for Iran."
