When 20-year-old American Violet Quick found out she was expecting nine months after she had her IUD inserted, she was dumbfounded.

Idaho-based Violet and her husband welcomed their healthy baby boy Rudy a week ago when she decided to post the photo on TikTok.

The photo shows new-born baby Rudy gripping his mum's IUD - the very device which was supposed to prevent his conception.

Violet said: "'I had my Skyla IUD for nine months before I got pregnant and the reason that I decided to take a test was because I was feeling nauseous for about two weeks and I would just throw up every once in a while.

"I didn't know what was going on and so I took a test and it was positive right away."

Violet had been married for less than a year to her husband John Francis when they got the news.

The newlywed quickly took six additional pregnancy tests to see if she was really pregnant, before doctors confirmed it at the hospital.

Violet has advice for others: "I would say if you are having any of those signs of pregnancy or if your period is late to take a test.

"IUDs work for the most part, someone has to be the .01 per cent and that's me and my baby."

According to Healthline, if you fall pregnant with an IUD inserted, ectopic pregnancy is highly likely.

Ectopic pregnancy occurs when a baby begins developing outside of your uterus, or in your fallopian tubes.

According to the International Journal of Women’s Health, five out 10,000 with a copper IUD each year will fall pregnant.

In comparison, only an estimated two out of 10,000 women with a hormonal IUD will be end up pregnant.

IUDs are the most effective female birth control on the market, with a 99 per cent success rate in preventing pregnancies.

But if the IUD slips out of place, the risk of pregnancy increases drastically.

If you are unable to feel your IUD strings, contact your doctor to schedule an ultrasound exam.

A mum in Vietnam also got a surprise when her bundle of joy came out clutching her IUD.

Obstetrician Tran Viet Phuong said the device came out when the baby was born.

The infant held firmly in his hands as the picture was taken, it is claimed.

Dr Phuong told local media: “After delivery, I thought him holding the device was interesting, so I took a picture.
